Choosing an airflow control damper

Start with the control function: manual airflow adjustment, a constant airflow setpoint or variable airflow control. Blue-R and Blue-S are volume control damper options; CAV and VAV units have separate selection requirements. Compare duct shape, airflow, available pressure and the required control arrangement. Check the selected model’s catalogue for operating limits and mounting details before specifying a manual mechanism or actuator.

What does a CAV controller do?

Preventing reverse airflow

A backdraft damper, also called a non-return damper, opens with the intended airflow and closes when that flow stops to help prevent reverse flow. For the NRD family, select the model for the duct shape, airflow direction and installation orientation. Check the catalogue pressure-loss data and closing-direction limits. The correct mounting arrangement is part of the selection, rather than a detail to decide after sizing.
